The business of how we watch our favorite movies and shows doesn't get much attention but it is significant - especially in the streaming era. Surprisingly, one of the biggest players in that space is Roku. Roku's rise to prominence -to the tune of $45 billion dollars - is detailed in this article. It's fascinating how they are following Netflix's playbook to make room for themselves in the streaming era. This chart shows just how significant they are the streaming device space.
Going toe to toe with Amazon's low price streaming devices is certainly commendable and now Roku is pushing hard into the content space. Not long ago they bought much of Quibi's (remember them) catalog to buttress their Roku Channel (Ad supported streaming) offering . I'm not a big fan of the AVOD (advertising-based video on demand) model myself but there are tons of people who don't want to or can't afford to pay for Netflix, or Hulu , or other subscription based content services every month. For those folks it's good that other options are being made available to them through Roku's service and others that make streaming content free to access with ads.
