One of my favorite favorite places on the internet is the reddit forum r/boxoffice. It consists of nearly 400,000 strangers that congregate to discuss the business of movies. Who knew ticket sales could garner such conversation, speculation and intense debate.
The great thing about analyzing the theatrical movie business vs movies for streaming is the objectivity. Because of the theatrical distribution model, how any wide release movie performs is completely transparent. Compare that to how Netflix shares the performance of its movies. It is dizzying the amount of Apple-esque marketing spin they use like - "Took off my blindfold this morning to discover that 45,037,125 Netflix accounts have already watched Bird Box — best first 7 days ever for a Netflix film!"
It's very difficult to objectively compare the performance of content across the streaming platforms especially with vague stats like that...though it doesn't stop companies like Nielsen from trying. Maybe the streaming platforms will come around and decide on a standard for reporting performance. I'm not holding my breath. But they're robbing themselves of letting a great community like r/boxoffice develop for streaming fans!
The Streamfunc newsletter will be going on hiatus! I'll be spending the upcoming weeks wrapping up the beta test for the streamfunc app and preparing for launch!
